Il presidente della FIFA ha trascorso gli ultimi anni garantendo pubblicamente che i Mondiali del 2026 sarebbero stati aperti a tutti, minimizzando le preoccupazioni sui visti e sui possibili effetti delle politichemigratorie dell’amministrazione Trump. Già il 10 marzo 2025, in un’intervista al quotidiano spagnolo As, Infantino definiva il torneo una “festa” e lasciava intendere che le questioni legate ai visti sarebbero state risolte. Pochi mesi dopo, il 24 giugno 2025, di fronte alle crescenti preoccupazioni per il caso Iran, inserito tra i Paesi colpiti dalle restrizioni statunitensi, Infantino minimizzava il tutto, silenziando anche i timori emersi all’interno della FIFA.
Il messaggio pubblico di Infantino non è mai cambiato. Il 31 agosto 2025, durante un incontro con i media africani a Nairobi, dichiarava: “Tutti saranno i benvenuti in Canada, Messico e Stati Uniti per la Coppa del Mondo FIFA del prossimo anno”. Nello stesso intervento assicurava che “questo processo sarà agevole e garantirà che coloro che si qualificheranno potranno venire con i loro tifosi”. Parole ribadite più volte. Sempre il 31 agosto, il numero uno della FIFA sosteneva che esistesse “l’impegno del governo degli Stati Uniti a garantire che il processo sia agevole, in modo che i tifosi di tutto il mondo siano i benvenuti”.
Anche il 17 novembre 2025, alla Casa Bianca, durante la presentazione del sistema FIFA PASS insieme a Donald Trump e al segretario di Stato MarcoRubio, Infantino parlava degli Stati Uniti come di un Paese pronto ad accogliere il mondo: “L’America dà il benvenuto al mondo. Abbiamo sempre detto che questa sarà la Coppa del Mondo più grande e inclusiva della storia”.
Eppure oggi la FIFA sostiene di non avere alcun ruolo nelle decisioni prese dalle autorità americane. La contraddizione appare ancora più evidente se si osserva il rapporto costruito da Infantino con Trump negli ultimi anni. The Athletic ricorda come il presidente della FIFA sia stato uno degli ospiti più assidui della CasaBianca, abbia partecipato a eventi politici vicini al movimento MAGA, abbia aperto un ufficio FIFA nella Trump Tower di New York e abbia spesso esibito pubblicamente la propria vicinanza al presidente americano.
Una strategia che sembrava garantire alla FIFA un canale privilegiato con Washington. Oggi, però, quel rapporto speciale non sembra aver prodotto i risultatipromessi. I problemi sui visti restano, le restrizioni colpiscono cittadini di Paesi qualificati ai Mondiali e perfino un arbitro FIFA è stato respinto alla frontiera.
Per anni Infantino ha chiesto al mondo di fidarsi delle sue rassicurazioni. Ora che emergono le conseguenze delle politiche migratorie statunitensi, la FIFA sostiene di non poter fare nulla. Ma sono proprio le dichiarazioni del suo presidente, pronunciate negli ultimi due anni, a dimostrare il suo fallimento.
