Secondo il suo racconto, l’animale lo avrebbe trascinato sott’acqua rimanendo impigliato nel leash, il laccio che collega il surfista alla tavola. “È successo tutto in modo incredibilmente rapido. Non credo siano passati più di due secondi tra il morso e la mia reazione”, ha spiegato. A quel punto, a guidare Santiñaque è stato l’istinto: “Mi stava trascinando in acqua e la mia risposta immediata è stata prenderlo a calci il più forte possibile per farlo mollare”.

La mossa ha funzionato. Lo squalo ha lasciato la presa, anche se durante la colluttazione il leash si è spezzato. Santiñaque è riuscito così a nuotare verso la riva, concentrandosi esclusivamente sulla fuga: “Dal momento in cui sono stato morso fino a quando ho raggiunto la spiaggia mi sono concentrato su ciò che dovevo fare ed ho evitato di farmi prendere dal panico”.

Una volta a terra, gli amici gli hanno applicato un laccio emostatico in attesa dei soccorsi. Trasportato in ospedale, è stato sottoposto a un intervento chirurgico per la rottura di un tendine e lesioni muscolari. Il morso, però, non ha interessato le arterie principali e le sue condizioni non sono considerate gravi.

Nonostante quanto accaduto, il ventenne ha escluso qualsiasi sentimento di rabbia verso l’animale. “L’oceano è casa sua e siamo noi a entrare nel suo ambiente”, ha scritto. E ha aggiunto: “Gli squali non sono cattivi né mostri. Sono animali selvatici e una parte essenziale dell’ecosistema marino”.

Nothing says jet fuel crisis, as one prospective attender put it, like flying everyone to Rio de Janeiro. Aviation leaders will converge in Brazil this weekend for the Iata AGM, the annual global airline summit, with the industry still, for the most part, looking resolutely skyward.

È l’accusa rivolta a Joshua Cullen, 47 anni, arrestato in Florida nell’ambito di un’indagine avviata dopo la scomparsa della donna. Nei suoi confronti sono stati contestati i reati di negligenza verso una persona anziana e vilipendio di cadavere. A dare il via all’inchiesta è stata proprio la denuncia di scomparsa presentata dall’uomo. Agli agenti avrebbe raccontato di non avere più notizie della madre da mesi, sostenendo che, dopo un ricovero in ospedale a seguito di un ictus, la donna si fosse allontanata insieme a “un uomo ricco non identificato”. Una versione che avrebbe iniziato quasi subito a mostrare diverse incongruenze.

Approfondendo gli accertamenti, gli investigatori hanno scoperto che Cullen aveva avuto accesso ai conti correnti della madre e che nel frattempo avrebbe utilizzato parte del denaro per acquistare un camper. Non solo. All’interno della casa mancavano numerosi effetti personali della donna, compresi alcuni mobili e perfino il letto, circostanze che hanno contribuito ad aumentare i sospetti degli inquirenti.

La scoperta nel fiume

La svolta è arrivata mentre le ricerche della donna risultavano ancora ufficialmente aperte. Alcuni diportisti hanno segnalato alle autorità la presenza di un oggetto sospetto nelle acque del Peace River. Quando gli agenti sono intervenuti sul posto, hanno recuperato un tappeto legato con catene e appesantito da blocchi di cemento. All’interno c’erano resti umani. Gli esami effettuati dal medico legale hanno poi confermato che appartenevano proprio alla madre di Cullen.

Da quel momento l’attenzione degli investigatori si è concentrata interamente sul figlio. Attraverso le immagini delle telecamere e i sistemi di rilevamento targhe, gli agenti sono riusciti a ricostruire alcuni movimenti del quarantasettenne. In particolare, la sua auto sarebbe stata ripresa il 28 marzo mentre si dirigeva verso l‘area di Hunters Creek con una carriola fissata sul tetto del veicolo. Successivamente, gli investigatori hanno scoperto che una carriola era stata ritrovata proprio nei pressi del luogo in cui è stato recuperato il corpo. Un dettaglio considerato particolarmente importante nell’inchiesta e che avrebbe contribuito a collegare Cullen alla scena.

Le parole dello sceriffo

Commentando il caso, lo sceriffo Carmine Marceno ha parlato di una vicenda che ha assunto contorni sempre più inquietanti con il passare dei giorni. “Quella che era iniziata come un’indagine su una persona scomparsa ha presto rivelato una rete di bugie, inganni e uno scioccante disprezzo per la dignità umana”, ha dichiarato annunciando l’arresto del sospettato.

Secondo la ricostruzione degli investigatori, la donna sarebbe morta all’interno dell’abitazione e il figlio avrebbe continuato a vivere lì per settimane prima di disfarsi del corpo: “Riteniamo che la donna sia morta in casa e che Cullen abbia continuato a vivere accanto al suo cadavere”, ha spiegato Marceno. Lo sceriffo non ha nascosto la propria indignazione, aggiungendo: “Questo spregevole individuo ha abbandonato la donna, lasciandola sola e abbandonata, mentre lui, egoisticamente, continuava la sua vita”. Le indagini proseguono e gli investigatori stanno continuando a raccogliere prove per chiarire ogni aspetto della vicenda. “Al termine, valuteremo se siano necessarie ulteriori accuse”, hanno fatto sapere le autorità.
