13 June 2026 at 11:38

Manifestantes pedem retirada do nome

13 June 2026 at 11:27

When did Europe go wrong? For decades, we thought the European project would disappear due to external threats… but we never imagined that this would happen because of the irresponsibility of its leaders, nor because of the inaction of its citizens. Nobody thought that Europe would cease to be the horizon that the rest of the world aspires to reach.

11 June 2026 at 18:49

Exchange of fire between US and Iran marks beginning of a dangerous new phase in the war

11 June 2026 at 10:14

With the latest exchanges of fire between the United States and Iran, the war in the Persian Gulf and its fragile ceasefire — marked by increasingly serious skirmishes — has entered a new phase, the most dangerous yet, raising the prospect of a return to hostilities. While the United States attacked Iranian targets for the second consecutive night, the Iranian General Staff has once again announced the complete closure of the Strait of Hormuz, and the Revolutionary Guard Corps has warned that Iranian troops will respond “decisively” to any attack by the adversary. President Donald Trump has threatened attacks may continue on Thursday if Tehran does not accept his conditions for peace.

A UFC fight at the White House: Trump’s controversial sporting event sparks a wave of criticism

The image is unprecedented even by Washington standards. A massive four-pronged steel structure known as “The Claw” rises above the White House South Lawn as workers put the finishing touches on the venue that will host UFC Freedom 250. The mixed martial arts event, promoted by President Donald Trump and UFC CEO Dana White, is intended to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence.

Perpetual war in Beirut’s suburbs: ‘I would move to another planet if that would give me peace’

9 June 2026 at 11:24

On one of the main roads out of Dahieh, the name given to the Beirut suburbs now at the heart of Middle East geopolitics, a row of streetlights bearing the same photograph of Iran’s penultimate supreme leader, the late Ali Khamenei, seem to bid farewell to those leaving the area. A few meters further on, as the city of Beirut begins, the iconography that floods Dahieh with the faces of Iranian and Hezbollah leaders — its Lebanese allies — vanishes, as does, to a large extent, the threat of Israeli strikes.

Iran war drives a wedge between Trump and Netanyahu

The relationship between Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu lends itself more to psychological analysis than political, after a decade in which the volatile U.S. president has alternately showered the Israeli prime minister with insults and excessive praise — sometimes almost within the same sentence. The war they launched together against Iran 100 days ago has driven them apart as the original plan dissolved: a short, successful operation with oil-related benefits, modeled on the capture of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela. Beyond how the Iran war is resolved — if it is resolved — its lasting legacy could well be the rift between the two leaders.

Israel’s offensive in southern Lebanon: 2,900 dead, 36,000 homes destroyed and 1.4 million displaced

5 June 2026 at 08:45

Southern Lebanon — which was turned into a battleground between Israel and the pro‑Iranian militia Hezbollah in 2023 — has suffered a new wave of devastation since February 28, when the Israeli and U.S. governments declared war on Iran and Hezbollah once again took up arms in solidarity with its ally. Israel then shifted its focus from Iran to striking Lebanon, intensifying both its military offensive and its occupation of the neighboring country.

The Iran war and the billion‑dollar fund for Trump’s allies are eroding the president’s grip on Republicans in Congress

The vote in the House of Representatives on Wednesday to limit Donald Trump’s authority to continue his war in Iran will not bring that conflict to an end. But it does represent a symbolic setback for the U.S. president on an issue — the Middle East — that has become, both domestically and in foreign policy, the most painful stone in the shoe of his return to the White House. Meanwhile, the weeks go by and, with the peace deal with Tehran stalled, it seems clear that Washington has no idea how to extract itself from a quagmire of its own making.

Israel and Lebanon agree to Washington-mediated ceasefire

4 June 2026 at 10:27

Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a ceasefire, a tripartite statement from both governments and the U.S. State Department announced. The cessation of hostilities is conditional on the Lebanese fundamentalist militant group Hezbollah completely halting its attacks and withdrawing its operatives from south of the Litani River. If implemented, the pact would open the door to relaunching peace talks between the United States and Iran.

Spain confronts the submerged threat posed by Russia’s ghost fleet

In December 2024, the Eagle S., an oil tanker flying the Cook Islands flag that had sailed from a Russian port, was detained by Finnish police. It was accused of damaging an electric cable and four other data cables on the floor of the Baltic Sea with its anchor. It may have been an accident, but repeated incidents prompted NATO the following month to launch a military operation, Baltic Sentry, deploying surveillance aircraft, ships, and drones to confront the undersea threat. Suspicions pointed to the so‑called Russian ghost fleet, with which the Putin regime is evading EU sanctions imposed after the invasion of Ukraine.

Iran and the US loosen their grip on the Strait of Hormuz despite attacks and twists in negotiations

4 June 2026 at 10:04

Despite all the difficulties, as numerous as they are, something is moving in the Strait of Hormuz. Even before the United States and Iran agreed to reopen it, the world’s most important energy shipping lane has shown signs of a slight loosening. Despite the double blockade — imposed first by Tehran and then by Washington — the number of ships managing to transit has grown in recent days. Some — the majority — do so with the permission of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Others are escorted by the U.S. Navy. A few take the risk on their own.

Russia steps up attacks on Ukraine and threats to Europe: ‘The peaceful sleep is over’

A sense of calm runs through Russia despite the fact that these are dangerous months. The hopes the Kremlin had placed on U.S. President Donald Trump handing Ukraine to it on a platter have faded; the war is a drain on Russia with no strategic victories, and security forces are tightening their control over the state just months before legislative elections that are shaping up as a plebiscite on Russian President Vladimir Putin.

US Ambassador Ronald Johnson, an uncomfortable voice amid Mexico’s defense of sovereignty

The Mexican government’s campaign against foreign interference has reached U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson. The U.S. representative this week clashed with President Claudia Sheinbaum after her Sunday speech, in which she protested U.S. interference in Mexico’s internal politics. Johnson, a former Green Beret appointed by Donald Trump to press for action against the drug cartels, replied with a social media post that the Mexican leader acknowledged almost immediately: “Ambassadors must be respectful of countries’ internal political affairs.”

The order to remove Trump’s name from the Kennedy Center leaves the institution’s closure in limbo

Since his return to the White House, Donald Trump has put into practice that old maxim that it’s better to ask for forgiveness than for permission — except that the president of the United States never apologizes. The order issued on Friday by a federal judge in Washington to remove the Republican’s name from the Kennedy Center (KC), the capital’s major center of music and opera that Trump renamed without permission, has left the cultural institution in a state of uncertainty after more than a year of political meddling from the White House.

Trump, mayor (and emperor) of Washington

Portrait of Trump on a sign that last week covered works at the roundabout in front of the train station.

Rare is the day Washington residents do not wake up to a new jolt courtesy of U.S. President Donald Trump. And it is not only — though it is also — because of the war with Iran, his use of the press to poison public opinion, or his disrespectful posts on Truth Social. It is because of the unilateral renovations that Trump is undertaking in the U.S. capital, like a mayor with unlimited budget and power, like a Roman emperor or a king obsessed with a city.
