The European Future Combat Air System (FCAS), a joint project led by France and Germany with participation from Spain, has failed because of disagreements between Airbus, the German representative, and Dassault, the French firm. It was the most ambitious European project at a time when the EU says it wants to increase and coordinate military spending to develop shared defense technologies, programs, and platforms — like the one that collapsed on Monday, June 8. What happened with FCAS casts doubt on whether Europe can ever reconcile national sovereignty with the demands of building next-generation, complex weapons systems, at a moment when the EU is trying to bolster its defense sovereignty and the United States is beginning to withdraw its security umbrella. It also adds pressure and lessons for other projects trying to move forward.

Bullen con consejos para superar las pruebas, con rumores sobre las fechas de examen, hojas de cálculo para estimar posibilidades de éxito y mensajes de quienes llevaban años esperando el momento para examinarse. La razón de tanta expectación cabe en una cifra: más de 174.000 personas han solicitado participar en la principal oposición para convertirse en funcionario de la Unión Europea, atraídas por hacer carrera internacional, estabilidad laboral y un salario de entrada de en torno a los 5.500 euros brutos mensuales; una cantidad que para los países del sur de Europa es tremendamente atractiva. Detrás de esta competencia masiva, además, se libra otra batalla menos visible: la de los Estados miembros por aumentar la presencia de sus nacionales en la administración europea.

La Unión Europea inicia este viernes una nueva era, más dura, en política migratoria. El Pacto de Migración y Asilo, resultado de años de negociaciones entre los Estados miembros, entra oficialmente en vigor con la promesa de reforzar el control de las fronteras exteriores, acelerar los procedimientos de asilo y aumentar las devoluciones de personas sin derecho a permanecer en territorio europeo. El nuevo conjunto de normas y sistemas que tendrán que empezar a aplicar los Estados miembros es el más restrictivo de la historia de una Europa cada vez más replegada sobre sí misma. Y llega en un momento en el que la extrema derecha, con sus discursos contra la inmigración, no deja de avanzar en el Viejo Continente.

“The era of deportations has begun.” A few months ago, this line from far‑right Swedish MEP Charlie Weimers sounded like a provocation. Now, after the agreement on the EU’s new Return Regulation between Parliament, the member states and the Commission, it reads more like an accurate description of the European Union’s political direction. With the legal framework for sending migrants to deportation camps outside Europe nearly complete, several member states — Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Denmark and Greece — have intensified their search for countries willing to host them, mainly in Africa, far from the European continent, according to diplomatic sources. The political battle is over; the geographical one is just beginning.
