Largest comeback in NBA finals history galvanizes city and inspires morning-after chants of ‘Knicks in five!’
New Yorkers woke up on Thursday morning – those who had even slept in the city that never sleeps – still jubilant after the Knicks men’s basketball team had made history the night before.
The team staged the largest comeback in NBA finals history to overcome the San Antonio Spurs in the dying seconds of the fourth game of the finals – and put themselves 3-1 up and within one game of a rare championship win.

Il Garden passa dai fischi all’esplosione finale. New York ribalta una gara che sembrava finita, cancella un -29 contro San Antonio e vince 107-106 con il tap-in di Anunoby a un secondo dalla sirena. I Knicks sono avanti 3-1 nelle Finals e sabato possono chiudere la serie in Texas
Una rimonta così, alle Nba Finals, non si era mai vista. I New York Knicks vincono gara-4 contro i San Antonio Spurs dopo essere stati sotto di 29 punti a 9’27’’ dalla fine del terzo quarto. Finisce 107-106, con il tap-in di OG Anunoby a un secondo dalla sirena. Il Garden esplode, gli Spurs restano fermi, quasi senza capire come una partita dominata per oltre due quarti sia sfuggita di mano.
New York sale così sul 3-1 nella serie e si prende tre match point per l’anello. Il primo arriverà sabato, in Texas, in gara-5. San Antonio, invece, deve fare i conti con una sconfitta che cambia tutto: non solo per il risultato, ma per il modo in cui è arrivata.
La serata dei Knicks parte nel modo peggiore. Karl-Anthony Towns commette due falli rapidi e coach Brown è costretto a rivedere subito le rotazioni. San Antonio ne approfitta. La palla gira, le triple entrano, Harper e Vassell puniscono ogni spazio, Victor Wembanyama controlla il match su entrambi i lati del campo. New York fatica a costruire tiri puliti e dopo pochi minuti è già sotto di dieci.
Il primo tempo è tutto degli Spurs. I texani tirano con il 60% dal campo e il 54% da tre, mentre i Knicks non trovano ritmo e vengono fischiati dal pubblico al rientro negli spogliatoi. All’intervallo San Antonio è avanti di 27 punti. Il 2-2 nella serie sembra già scritto.
A inizio terzo quarto gli Spurs toccano anche il +29. Poi la partita cambia. Wembanyama viene punito con un Flagrant-1 per una gomitata a Towns e New York trova energia. Jalen Brunson comincia a segnare, la difesa dei Knicks alza il livello e San Antonio perde lucidità. Le scelte di De’Aaron Fox diventano sempre più complicate, arrivano palle perse in serie e i padroni di casa piazzano 13 punti consecutivi.
Gli Spurs riescono ancora a chiudere il terzo quarto avanti di 15 lunghezze, ma il Garden ha già capito che la partita non è finita. Nell’ultimo periodo San Antonio smette di attaccare con ordine. I tiri che nel primo tempo entravano con naturalezza diventano forzature, Wembanyama va fuori ritmo e New York prende campo possesso dopo possesso.
Brunson e Anunoby guidano la rimonta. Anche Alvarado trova canestri importanti. Con un parziale di 20-4, i Knicks passano avanti a 1’22’’ dalla fine grazie a una giocata di Brunson. Gli Spurs rimettono la testa avanti con i liberi di Castle a 30’’ dalla sirena e sembrano avere la palla della vittoria quando Fox cattura il rimbalzo a 16’’ dalla fine.
In quel momento basterebbe tenere il possesso e costringere New York al fallo. Fox, invece, attacca il ferro. Anunoby lo stoppa e regala ai Knicks l’ultima possibilità. Brunson prende una tripla difficile, la palla finisce sul ferro, Anunoby arriva più in alto di tutti e firma il tap-in del 107-106.
San Antonio chiama timeout ma non riesce nemmeno a costruire un tiro pulito. La sirena chiude una partita che entra nella storia del Garden e della postseason. New York è a una vittoria dal titolo, gli Spurs devono provare a riaprire una serie che fino a metà terzo quarto sembrava destinata al pareggio.
Per i Knicks, Brunson chiude con 36 punti, 7 assist e percentuali solide: 9/18 dal campo, 3/7 da tre, 9/11 ai liberi. Anunoby ne aggiunge 33, compreso il canestro della vittoria. Towns firma 13 punti e 10 rimbalzi.
A San Antonio non bastano i 24 punti e 13 rimbalzi di Wembanyama, i 21 punti di Harper e i 18 punti di Fox e Vassell. Fox distribuisce anche 7 assist, ma il finale resta segnato dalla scelta che ha ridato ai Knicks l’ultimo possesso.

New Yorkers didn’t hesitate to make their displeasure heard during Donald Trump’s attendance at one of the city’s most important sporting nights in decades. In a packed Madison Square Garden, as the national anthem played before the start of the first NBA Finals game to be staged in New York in 27 years, fans erupted in boos when the president of the United States — the first sitting president to attend an NBA Finals game — appeared in his box, protected by bulletproof glass, and appeared on the arena’s giant screen. The Republican offered a mocking smile as the game between the Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs got under way in a series the New Yorkers now lead 2-1 after the visitors’ 115-111 victory.

Knicks aiming to win first title since 1973
Donald Trump was loudly booed when he was shown on the video screens at Madison Square Garden on Monday night before Game 3 of the NBA finals between the San Antonio Spurs and New York Knicks.
Trump was shown on the jumbotron while the Star-Spangled Banner was being sung before the game, and jeers and boos broke out around the arena. The president was shown for a little over eight seconds and held a salute the whole time with a smile on his face. A few seconds later, the video board showed Knicks players in line and the boos turned to cheers.

Six people were stabbed at Penn Station, New York’s main intercity rail hub and its busiest station. The attack occurred on Sunday after 7.00 p.m. local time (1.00 a.m. CEST) between 33rd Street and Seventh Avenue, the New York Fire Department told local media. The incident comes as the city is on a high security alert ahead of a planned presidential visit on Monday by U.S. President Donald Trump, Game 3 of the NBA Finals, and the start of the FIFA World Cup.

When Mangue Banzima arrived in New York at 17 from an African country — he prefers not to say which — the only thing that made him feel at home was the Knicks. He remembers wearing sneakers as a child like those of his idol Patrick Ewing. And when he arrived in the United States, he found a city where his basketball team was everywhere. Banzima’s arrival in New York coincided with something no Knicks fan will ever forget: they had just reached the NBA Finals, where they lost to the San Antonio Spurs. That was in 1999. It has not happened since in 27 years — until now, when the New Yorkers have finally qualified to compete for the famed ring, for which they will face the Spurs again. After so many disappointments, the success of a team used to failure has infected the whole city with euphoria.
