"Russian ballistic missiles remain a problem, and we need an answer to that problem," President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

Sweden will contribute $108 million to the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), a US-led initiative that finances American weapons for Ukraine, the Swedish Defense Ministry said on 18 June.

The payment is Sweden's fourth under PURL and lifts its total funding for the program to $543 million, meaning its three earlier contributions came to $435 million.

What the funding buys

PURL is a US initiative administered by NATO. Under it, the United States makes high-priority American defense materiel available in support packages that allied and partner countries pay for, among them advanced air defense systems and ammunition.

Through the program, Ukraine can quickly obtain "highly prioritized American defense materiel, including advanced air defense and ammunition," Defense Minister Pål Jonson said, calling it decisive for Ukraine's defense against continued Russian attacks. He described Sweden's support as long-term, comprehensive, and based on Ukraine's needs.

Sweden's wider military aid

Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Sweden has provided 128 billion Swedish kronor (about $13.6 billion) in military support, part of which has gone to funds and initiatives run by other countries.

The new $108 million forms part of a support package Sweden announced earlier.
