Washington mayoral candidates outline how they would stand up to Trump

The new DC mayor will face a slew of challenges in the city, including how to handle the Trump administration

There’s a transplant from Mar-a-Lago at the center of DCs mayoral primary race on Tuesday, but his name is nowhere on the ballot.

For the first time in more than a decade, Washington DC will have a new mayor this year as the city faces concerns about how to address public safety, housing affordability, and increased federal immigration enforcement in the district. How the next mayor handles Donald Trump is also key question on residents’ minds, with many closely watching to see if any of the president’s supporters are pouring money into the race, as well as the primaries for the city’s congressional delegate.

Russia hit Kyiv’s 1,000-year-old monastery, then launched disinformation campaign with five different scenarios. Ukraine has seen this playbook in Mariupol

Russia has launched a large-scale disinformation campaign attempting to justify mass strikes on Kyiv's civilian and cultural objects, the Ukrainian Center for Countering Disinformation (CPD) has announced. Russian sources are using a classic scenario by attempting to disguise outright terror against civilians as "strikes on military targets" or shifting blame to Ukraine itself, the CPD said.

The disinformation campaign follows a pattern Ukrainian authorities have documented after previous Russian strikes on cultural and civilian targets. The Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO World Heritage site dating back to 1051, is protected under the 1954 Hague Convention on the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict and the Geneva Convention Additional Protocol I, Article 53.

Russian information operations following strikes on Ukrainian civilian targets have followed predictable patterns since 2022.

Five Russian disinformation tactics CPD identified

The CPD documented five specific Russian disinformation tactics deployed after the Kyiv strikes.

  1. The Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra fire is called "Ukrainian provocation" or "self-arson."
  2. Russian conspiracy theories blame Ukrainian authorities for the strike on the Higher Anti-Corruption Court building.
  3. The Dovzhenko Film Studio is declared a "legitimate military target" by Russian propaganda because it is allegedly a "propaganda nest."
  4. False allegations claim Kyiv has weapons-production workshops disguised as civilian buildings — in Russian propagandists' framing, every Kyiv building is a "military object."
  5. And "Ukrainian air defense" is blamed for damage to civilian buildings, a standard Russian deflection tactic.

CPD's framing: Russia carries full responsibility

All responsibility for the death and injury of peaceful Kyiv residents, destruction of historical and civilian buildings lies exclusively with Russia, and it must be punished for this, the Center says.

"No manipulation, conspiracy theories, or attempts to grant civilian objects 'military status' will help the aggressor conceal another war crime," the CPD said in its statement.

The CPD's position represents the Ukrainian government's position.

Broader pattern: two documented Russian disinformation campaigns after cultural site strikes

Russian disinformation following strikes on Ukrainian cultural sites has followed predictable patterns since 2022. Two documented precedent cases illustrate the same tactics now being deployed against Kyiv.

After the 16 March 2022 Russian airstrike on the Mariupol Drama Theater. Russia denied conducting the strike and claimed that Ukrainian soldiers had blown up the building themselves. An Associated Press investigation found that approximately 600 people died in the bombing, which makes it the deadliest single known attack on civilians in the war.

Amnesty International later concluded that the strike was a "clear war crime" conducted by two 500-kg bombs dropped from Russian fighter jets, ruling out alternative explanations.

After the 23 July 2023 Russian missile strike on the Odesa Transfiguration Cathedral, located within the UNESCO-protected historic center of Odesa, Russia's Defense Ministry denied targeting the cathedral and claimed the damage was caused by "the fall of a Ukrainian anti-aircraft guided missile," per Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

UNESCO condemned the strike as an "escalation of violence against the cultural heritage of Ukraine." The cathedral's assistant rector, Father Myroslav, confirmed a "direct hit to the cathedral" with three altars destroyed.

The pattern across the Mariupol Theater, Odesa Cathedral, and now Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra cases is consistent: Russia denies conducting the strike and attributes damage to Ukrainian air defense or self-inflicted destruction.

‘Reeks of corruption’: protesters rally as Trump hosts UFC event on his birthday

Demonstrations took off in Washington and across US as Trump throws first private, for-profit sporting event ever held on White House grounds

Dozens of people stood across the entrance gates to the Ellipse, the park south of the White House, on Sunday afternoon, holding protest signs and chanting as the president prepared to host seven mixed martial arts fights on the lawn.

Thousands of fight fans streamed past the protesters into the sprawling public viewing area that the Trump administration and the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), which is hosting the fights, erected steps from the White House. The cage fights, marketed as a celebration of the country’s “fighting spirit” ahead of its 250th anniversary, are being held on Donald Trump’s 80th birthday.

Fireworks reportedly trigger mass horse stampede through Rome streets, injuring several soldiers

Fireworks set off without authorization in Rome reportedly triggered a mass stampede of frightened horses during a late-night rehearsal for Italy’s annual Republic Day parade, injuring multiple riders and animals.

The incident occurred late Friday near the ancient Baths of Caracalla as mounted units from Italy's armed forces and law enforcement agencies were practicing for the June 2 national celebration, Reuters reported.

Roughly 35 horses bolted through city streets following the unexpected fireworks, the outlet said. Video captured the chaotic scene, showing numerous horses galloping along Via Cristoforo Colombo as drivers recorded the scene.

The search and recovery effort reportedly continued until dawn the next day, with the last horse recovered roughly nine miles from the scene.

According to Reuters, the sudden bangs began shortly before 11:30 p.m. and triggered panic among the ceremonial horses, many of which were being escorted by Italy’s Army, Carabinieri paramilitary police, and state police.

Some riders were mounted, while others were leading horses by hand when the startled animals broke free, the outlet said.

During the chaos, a 22-year-old soldier reportedly suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung, though officials said his injuries were not life-threatening. At least 15 horses were also injured, though none required euthanasia, according to reports.

Italian outlet ANSA said the stampede injured three young soldiers from the Montebello Lancers and a 29-year-old policewoman.

ILLEGAL STREET TAKEOVER SHUTS DOWN BUSY INTERSECTION WITH DANGEROUS STUNTS, FIREWORKS: POLICE

Officials are reviewing how the unauthorized fireworks were ignited near the rehearsal site.

The Rome Local Police Command said four traffic police officers were involved in the incident and were reportedly near the firecrackers when the explosion occurred, ANSA said.

Officials said one of the officers allegedly lit a battery of fireworks about 200 yards from the horses, the outlet reported. The officer was identified as a 50-year-old who joined the force after passing the most recent exam.

Video footage and witness statements suggest the explosions and the horses’ escape occurred simultaneously, according to the local report.

Rome police commander Mario De Sclavis told Corriere della Sera that the incident "discredits the image of the Corps and its officers," according to Reuters.

Sclavis added that the agency will take "necessary measures" to hold those responsible accountable, according to ANSA.

"Last night's events hit us like a tsunami," he said.
