Republican who chairs House panel says he based decision on testimony from Epstein’s longtime assistant Lesley Groff

Representative James Comer, the Republican who chairs the House committee on oversight and government reform, announced that he would be asking Alan Dershowitz, Jeffrey Epstein’s former attorney, to appear before the panel as part of its investigation into the late sex offender.

“I am going to ask Alan Dershowitz to come in, we will have questions for him and we will give him an opportunity to come in,” Comer said on Wednesday morning, adding that the decision was based on the testimony of Lesley Groff, Epstein’s longtime assistant, who testified before the committee on Tuesday, as well as “a meeting that I had afterwards with several of the Epstein survivors”.

Su Gates non sono emersi elementi che possano ricollegarlo ai reati per i quali Epstein è stato condannato. L’imprenditore e filantropo ha già dichiarato di aver tenuto incontri col finanziere per raccogliere fondi per le sue iniziative benefiche, definendolo un uomo inaffidabile e vendicativo, ma di non essere mai stato ospite sull’isola dove si sono consumati gli abusi su vittime anche minorenni. “Alla luce di ciò che so oggi, capisco che se anche avesse procurato i donatori promessi alla Fondazione Gates questo non avrebbe giustificato il fatto di essere associati a lui”, ha dichiarato l’informatico. Ha raccontato che nel 2011 era stato presentato a Epstein che gli promise di potere raccogliere miliardi di dollari per le campagna per la salute globale della Fondazione Gates: “Mi ricordo che ero al corrente del fatto che avesse avuto problemi legali in precedenza, ma non avevo pienamente realizzato il tipo di crimini che aveva commesso e ho accettato che mi venisse presentato senza fare i controlli che avrei dovuto fare”, ha ammesso. Precisando però di “non aver mai assistito a comportamenti criminali di Epstein, né avuto alcun indizio che fosse coinvolto in attività illecite”. Il fondatore di Microsoft ha anche sottolineato di non essere mai stato sulla sua isola, nel suo ranch o nella sua villa in Florida: “Non ho mai vittimizzato nessuno. Sebbene lui abbia cercato di instaurare un rapporto personale, io non ne sono mai stato interessato né ho mai ricambiato tale interesse”.

Gates sostiene di aver avuto pessimi rapporti con Epstein e di essere anche stato vittima dei suoi ricatti: “Era venuto a conoscenza di informazioni sulla mia vita personale, compreso il fatto che ero stato infedele a mia moglie. Queste relazioni non hanno niente a che vedere con le mie interazioni con Epstein, ma sono state dolorose per la mia famiglia. Tentò di usare queste informazioni, insieme a molte bugie aggiunte, per riallacciare le interazioni dopo che si erano interrotte nel 2014″.

Bill Gates testified in front of the House committee on oversight and reform on Wednesday, and told lawmakers in his opening remarks that he “never witnessed nor had any indication” that Jeffrey Epstein was “engaged in ongoing criminal conduct”.

“I am here to answer your questions about my interactions with Jeffrey Epstein and to help contribute to the committee’s important work,” Gates said in his opening statement, seen by the Guardian. “I support the release of all the Epstein files and sincerely hope that, through your efforts and those of others advocating on their behalf, the survivors of Epstein’s crimes can get the justice that they deserve.”
