Coalition says it’s good Hanson and One Nation getting the scrutiny of a party on the rise

Kevin Hogan, the shadow assistant treasurer, says he thinks it’s good Hanson was able to speak at the press club yesterday as One Nation “needs to be put under much more scrutiny” amid surging support.

The GetUp stunt completely backfired, it makes them look like [bullies] and makes her look like, you know, a victim in the sense that she’s being picked on. And that never works.

One Nation have tapped into, I think, to some fear and anxieties in the Australian public, and I think we have to acknowledge that. I certainly don’t agree with all the solutions that she puts out there, but look, I think it was healthy that she front up and that she was invited yesterday.

If you’re coming to Australia to have a better life, you become an Australian. That’s what we’re referring to as a monocultured Australia. You’re an Australian first, and your ethnicity or your creed comes second …

The reality is, we’re a Christian Judeo society with a law structure around us, and they’ve come with one clear objective: to have a better life. And that one clear objective should be, if they want to have a better life here, is to live within our culture and live within our laws and rules.

It was direct shooting. It hit the targets. It was clear. It was successful. And it addressed a number of the elephants in the room … So the speech hit the target for where Australians are today.

Kyle Sandilands has settled his legal dispute with ARN Media with a $12m cash payment over three years, but Jackie O Henderson’s $82m claim against the broadcaster will continue.

The shock jock agreed to drop his $85m lawsuit against KIIS FM, in return for a cash payment and $1.5m in advertising contra on ARN’s stations for a new broadcasting venture yet to be announced.

The inquiry heard evidence of residents being pressured to relocate, deceived about their rights and fearful of losing their homes and communities. Those allegations are serious, but Labor’s response shows they haven’t taken them seriously … They don’t care what the experts say or what people think. We’ve had to send in the Ombudsman to hold Labor to account before they do irreparable damage.

Gallagher on One Nation: ‘Opinion polls will come and go’

Katy Gallagher was also asked about the surge in One Nation, saying there was an obvious “reorganisation on the conservative side of politics”.

I think there is a lot of uncertainty and worry about events that are happening across the world, the impact that has here. Cost of living is the No 1 issue with anyone you talk to right now, and the government just has to remain focused on that, and that’s what we intend to do.

Opinion polls will come and go, they do. Our job is to make sure we’re making the right decisions for the right time and that it’s focused on the Australian people. And when there’s controversy about that, and we know we’ve had a lot of feedback around the budget, you know, our job is to front up and explain why we’ve taken those decisions.

The prime minister and foreign minister have issued a lengthier statement welcoming the agreement made by the US and Iran, and called for continued restraint to avoid further escalation.

President Donald Trump made the announcement he had signed a deal this morning, saying the strait of Hormuz would be reopened.

Continued restraint and constructive engagement will be essential to prevent further escalation and secure a lasting agreement. We are pleased the agreement between the US and Iran includes steps to reopening the Strait of Hormuz …

We encourage all parties to use this opportunity to pursue a durable and lasting peace through dialogue and diplomacy. Iran must address longstanding concerns about its nuclear program and the threat it poses to international security.
