After a decade of roiling South Carolina and national politics, Rep. Nancy Mace finished a distant fifth in her state's Republican primary for governor.

Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette and Alan Wilson, the state attorney general, now head to a runoff in the Republican contest for governor. President Trump vowed to “fight” for Ms. Evette in the second round.

South Carolina voters will choose nominees for governor and other offices in a state primary on Tuesday, the latest test of President Donald Trump's sway over Republican voters.

Democrats in both gubernatorial and Senate primaries have criticized what they see as failures of South Carolina's GOP-dominated leadership.

Any indication of tepid support for Graham Platner, a Democratic candidate for Senate in Maine, will be seen as a warning sign about his chances against Senator Susan Collins, the Republican incumbent.
